As summer approaches remember some important tips to keep your pet safe and happy during our sunny season.

1.NEVER leave your pet in a parked vehicle. Research has shown that on an 85 degree day the temperature in a parked vehicle with the windows cracked, can reach 102 degrees in just 10 minutes and can reach 120 degrees in only 30 minutes. Your pet can suffer severe permanent organ damage or possible death.

2. If your pet is outside, provide plenty of shade and water. (add ice to your pets water if possible). Put up a kiddie pool to allow your pet to cool off.

3. Limit exercise to early morning or evening hours when it is cooler and the sun is not so hot on your pet. Also remember walk your pet on the grass as the asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pets paws.

Heatstroke can be serious and often fatal result of a dog's prolonged exposure to excessive heat.

Signs of heatstroke: Early Stages

  • Heavy panting
  • Rapid breathing
  • Excessive drooling
  • Bright red gums and tongue
  • Standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in attempt to maintain balance

Advanced Stages

  • White or blue gums
  • Lethargy, unwilling or unable to move
  • Uncontrolled urination or defecation
  • Labored, noisy breathing
  • Shock

If your dog starts to show signs of heatstroke, immediately try cooling him down

  • Apply rubbing alcohol to the dogs pads
  • Apply ice pack to groin area
  • Hose down with water or place in bath tub with water
  • Give dog ice chips to lick on
  • Offer pedialyte to restore electrolytes

If you are not able to get your dog to cool down and he is has signs of advanced heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately.
